Zwischenzug
What it is
A zwischenzug, or in-between move, is an unexpected move inserted into a seemingly forced sequence — usually a check or bigger threat played before the 'obvious' recapture — that changes the outcome in your favor.
When to use it
Use it when the opponent expects an automatic recapture. Before recapturing, check whether you have an even more forcing move that must be answered first.
How to use it
When a trade or recapture is 'expected', pause and search for a check, a capture, or a threat that is more forcing than recapturing. Play that first, gaining a tempo or a piece, and only then complete the original operation.
