Zugzwang
What it is
Zugzwang is a situation in which it is a disadvantage to be the side to move: the opponent would be fine if they could pass, but every legal move damages their position — dropping a pawn, abandoning a key square, or walking into mate.
When to use it
It is most common in endgames with few pieces, and in blockaded positions where the opponent's pieces are already tied to defense and have no useful waiting moves.
How to use it
Restrict every one of the opponent's pieces until they have no good move left, then, if needed, hand them the move with a precise waiting move (often a quiet king or pawn move) that keeps your own position intact. Triangulation and opposition are classic zugzwang tools.
