Interference
What it is
Interference is placing a piece — often as a sacrifice — directly on the line between an enemy piece and what it defends or a square it controls, severing the connection so a decisive threat appears.
When to use it
Use it when two enemy pieces are coordinating along a line (a rook defending a back rank, a bishop guarding a mating square) and blocking that line breaks the defense.
How to use it
Spot the critical defensive line, then find a square on it where you can plant a piece. Even if the piece can be captured, the point is that removing the interposer costs a tempo or opens a second line — by then your threat has landed.
