Back-Rank Deflection
What it is
The back-rank weakness arises when a castled king is boxed in by its own pawns. A back-rank deflection forces away the single piece guarding the first rank, so your rook or queen delivers mate along it.
When to use it
Use it whenever the enemy king has no luft (escape square) and only one piece defends the back rank — the classic target of countless combinations.
How to use it
Spot the undefended back rank, identify the lone defender, and deflect or overload it with a check, capture or threat. Once it is gone, invade the back rank with check — it is mate.
